How much do you know about PTZ cameras?

, by Armia Ghali, 3 min reading time

PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) cameras are certainly useful because they can pan, tilt, and zoom, but some models also have innovative features that take your security system to the next level. Test your PTZ knowledge with this quiz.

True or False: IR illumination is always ineffective on PTZs because the zoom range far exceeds the capabilities of the integrated IR system.

False. Zoom priority mode, available on select Dahua PTZs, provides optimal IR coverage at any zoom setting. The camera has several sets of integrated IR illuminators that switch on and off depending on whether the camera is in wide-angle mode or zoomed in. This provides even illumination at wide angles and reduced power at narrow angles.

True or False: All long-range PTZ cameras suffer from issues such as blurriness, vibration, and slow focusing.

False. Dahua's Predictive Focus Algorithm (PFA) , available on select PTZs, eliminates these issues and improves video clarity with high-speed, continuous autofocus. PFA uses advanced focus technology to ensure the accuracy and predictability of subject-to-subject distance adjustment. This means that, unlike traditional PTZs where the image returns to focus as the camera repositions itself, cameras with PFA maintain focus while zooming. See PFA in action here .

Which function controls the camera's pan-tilt-zoom actions to automatically track a moving target?

Autotracking. This feature, available on Dahua's AI PTZ cameras 5" and above, allows the PTZ to detect a moving target and automatically track it across the camera's entire range of motion. This capability can be further enhanced by enabling the IVS function on the PTZ, which triggers the PTZ to track a target when it crosses a defined demarcation area. See autotracking in this video .

What does EIS stand for and what does it do?

Electronic image stabilization counteracts some of the vibration—and associated blur—inherent in windy environments or locations with nearby traffic. EIS provides a more stable field of view and expands mounting options, as the PTZ can be installed on a pole or in a pendant position without being significantly affected by vibration. And because the camera moves less, you save bandwidth and storage space!

Furthermore, other PTZ cameras are also equipped with OIS, or optical image stabilization. This hardware solution eliminates the need for image cropping because the footage is captured with full sensor readout. It helps reduce image distortion and produces more natural videos that are significantly better than EIS.

True or false: with so many options, it's really hard to find the right IP PTZ.

False. The Dahua website makes selecting a PTZ camera a breeze! Simply visit our website, www.dahuasecurity.com , and click the Product tab. In the dropdown menu, select PTZ Cameras to see the list of Dahua PTZ camera categories. You can then view the right PTZ camera for your surveillance needs!
